Hello everyone,

I set up this site to provide a convenient way to make my pictures available to friends and family. Since this frequently involves shooting my childrens activities, such as Karate, baseball, softball, soccer and school activities, I password protect those galleries to protect the privacy of the children. Please contact me at junkman888-smugmug@yahoo.com if you having trouble accessing the galleries.

Please feel free to leave comments. It is always helpful for me to know what you think, how these photos could be better, and how the website is working.

Please note I have put copyright notices on everything.

Thanks

U2 at Fordham University 3/6/09 - Good Morning America : Long overdue: Irish rock legends U2 play at Fordham, the unofficial Irish college of New York. If you know me, you might know I was Concert Committee chair at Fordham when U2 started touring. They were offerred to us, without even a demo tape, so we passed. In 1983, my brother Joe, then the chairman, bid the committee's entire budget on them, only to get outbid by Rochester.

It was a bit surreal seeing this, but quite the day nonetheless.

Sorry if the photos are not of the highest image quality, I shot with an advanced P&S with an articulated screen, so I could see where I was aimed as I held the camera over my head.

Operation Sail, July 4 1976, New York City : The US Bicentennial was celebrated in grand fashion in many ways. In New York, a vast flotilla of ships, sailed up the Hudson River. My father and our family was invited to a party on the 26th floor of the World Trade Center, Tower 2, I think. In anticipation of this this my parents gave me a new professional grade camera, a Konica T-3. Armed with just the 50mm f1.7 lens, I shot 4 or 5 rolls of Ektachrome. Frankly, I haven't seen them in years, but my old slides turned up when we moved houses.

These were scanned with a Nikon Coolscan V. I have upload significantly degraded pictures, since there is some commercial value to these photo's. The original scans are 110 MEGS each. All photo's copyright 2009 by John M. Cerra

Update 1/25/2009. The Op Sail slides are on hold now. I am working on Dad's slides right now.

Yanks-Padres 6/19/2008 Joba, Arod, Jeter, Mo! : Thursday June 19, 2008 was a gift of a baseball day. Sunny, 75, excellent seats (thanks Pat Niro) and a gem of baseball game as the Yankees beat the Padres 2-1. Joba Chamberlain started and gave up one run on a seeing eye, way behind the pitch slicing ground rule double by Tony Clarke. Joe Girardi pulled Joba at exactly 100 pitches, one batter short of being the winning pitcher. Veras to Farnsworth to Mo. It was Hall of Fame Day, as we saw Jeter, Arod, Mo, and I'm forecasting Jorge and Joba. It just doesn't get better than this. Check back every few days as I add shots.

Chuck Berry 9/15/2007 Nomahegan Park, Cranford NJ : Once a year, the county pays for a Music Fest. This year, they got ol' Johnny B. Goode himself, who played his guitar like ringing a bell, and he looked like he should:)

All summer long, I waited for this concert. Armed with a new camera and lens (Nikon D200 and an 18mm-200mm VR lens), I would shoot "masterpieces" of this legend.

A funny thing happened on the way to the concert. Three weeks prior, I had an accident at the beach, dislocating my shoulder, and tearing my biceps tendon and rotator cuff. I could not handle the camera with my right hand. Nor could I be in the middle of the crowd. So, in the back of the crowd, I would lift this heavy monster over my head, aim blindly, and hit the multiple exposure button. I got less than 5% keepers, but I got something. I apologize that the photo quality. These are cropped to about 10% of the original file. But I got them:)

Normally, Chuck Berry travels without a band. The promoter hires a band that is capable of playing the 3 chord, 12 bar music that Berry wrote. Over the years, a lot of up and coming bands, such as Springsteen & The E Street Band, backed him. The original plan, as I understand it, was for The Smithereens, another band on the bill to back him. But Berry brought his St. Louis based band with him, which include a son and daughter.

Yankees vs Devil Rays 2nd Game 7/21/2007 : This game was a blow-out. I think the Yanks won 19-7. It was a make up of an April rainout. These are the first photo's with my new D200. What a camera! The seats were much better, these are full frame, no crop shots. But the lighting was a bit more challenging, since it was a 7:00 PM game. My take away? My 300mm F 4.0 Nikkor isn't fast enough for pro caliber shooting at night games. This is ISO 800, 1/320 second at F4. Not fast enough to stop the blur of a batters hands.

Hawks at Roselle Golf Club : For the past three years, I have been trying to get pictures of the 2 Hawks that live on the course. They have frustrated me to no end, flying around when I don't have a camera and staying away when I did. But today, they agreed to pose for me.

Actually, there are two types of shots here. The first are of one hawk on the fairway. I woefully underexposed these shots. I got too excited, cranked the shutter up to 1/1000 of a second, and never increased the ISO, and ignored the warnings. That I have any usable images is a testimony ot Nikon's Capture software.

Later on. I went back and found the pair in a tree. I probably shot 40 photo's...they never moved. Maybe in more rural areas you can do this...but I live just 15 miles outside of New York City.

According to someone who runs a website that features Hawks in NYC, these are fledgings. If I get the info correct from numerous websites, they would have been born this past May 2007. If you can add anything, please leave a comment.

Yankee Baseball and Yankee Stadium : I shot all of these photo's on two days, Sunday August 13 and Thursday August 17, 2006. All of the game shots are from the same seats in section 507, which is the mezzanine level, down the first base line, near the foul pole. I plan on shooting the stadium a lot, before the heresy of a "new" Yankee Stadium us upon us in 2009.

Yankees - Tigers ALDS Thursday Oct 5 : Thursday October 5, 2006 at Yankee Stadium. A game scheduled for Wednesday, October 4, but controversially rained out. (They never started the game, and kept the crowd there until 10:10. ESPN reported the game was cancelled at 9:30 PM.)

Jason Verlander, the flame throwing rookie righty, killed the righties in the Yankee lineup, but struggled with the lefties. Mike Mussina gave up 4 runs is a very good effort, Marcus Thames probably having his best day as a pro, pretty much killing Mussina.

Don't let them kid you, post season baseball belongs in the day, not at night.
